About Me

My love for baking started at an early age. I enjoyed baking and trying new recipes since I was in High School, but after I got married in 2002, I was only baking the occasional cake. I developed an interest in German cakes and confections, and invested in several German recipe books. I attempted a few of these recipes and started making these cakes for the birthday parties of some of my closest friends. Soon after, the first order came in to bake for another birthday! But I was still working as teacher at the local Kindergarten, so my love for baking continued to stay a favourite pastime. 

 

About 11 years ago, I started selling traditional German Christmas cookies at a local Christmas market. This market steadily grew until finally, in 2017, I came to a crossroads; either I had stop baking for custom orders and the Christmas market as a part-time hobby, or I had to make it into a fully-fledged business. 

 

And so, Silke’s Backfreuden, or Baking Pleasures, was born!

 

Since then, the company has grown exponentially. We are based in a small German countryside community called Lüneburg, near the small town of Paulpietersburg in northern KZN. We bake any type of cake, with a special focus on Tortes and other German specialities. We also specialise in German Christmas cookies around Christmas time, but incorporating traditional South Africa favourites, like Coffee Creams and Syrupskuchen.
